The Yorkshire and Humberside Team Judo Championships took place at York Railway Institute on Sunday November the 8th. Due to the difficulty of raising a team with ladies in two weight categories and men in five categories, and still wishing to give their members the opportunity of taking part in such an event, Aireborough and Wharfedale Judo Club combined with their friends from Bradford Judo Club and managed to come up with two teams, although they were both short of one lady. After an excellent competition both teams were presented with medals. The team of Jessica Copperwaite, Jordan Smith, Richard Brown, Yurijs Kusakovs, Regan Dickinson and Jim Tunstall finished in silver medal position, losing in the final to a very good team from Haltemprice in Hull. Bronze medals were won by the other team of Debbie Mullen, Michael Brewerton, Graham Takhar, Mick Bowmer, Tony Devine and Nigel Clynes, even though Nigel had to withdraw before the semifinal with a torn chest muscle. To round off an excellent day’s judo there was a competition for teams of three men, who were over thirty five years of age, and the team of Richard Brown, Regan Dickinson and Tony Devine won the silver medal in that one.
29/05/09 - British Judo Information: Hygiene Notice
You may or may not have read in the national media, that the All Japan Judo Federation has confirmed that an infectious skin fungus has been spreading throughout clubs across Japan.
Following these reports the British Judo Association would like to remind all clubs, coaches and members of the importance of prevention in the spreading of skin infections through basic hygiene strategies.
These include:
• Shower immediately after each mat session
• Clean the mats
• Use liquid soap dispensers and avoid bars of soap
• Check your skin before entering the mat area
• Report any skin lesion to a medical practitioner
These strategies should be communicated to your members on a regular basis as a matter of course.
The BJA would like to stress there is a clear distinction between the infection that has spread in Japan, called ‘Trichophyton tonsurans’, and ringworm, which many of you will be familiar with. The Trichophyton tonsurans fungal infection is potentially serious due to scarring and potential hair loss. The characteristics include small blisters and crusts with a surrounding red area that can be on the body or the scalp.
It is important that anyone who suspects that they have any type of skin infection seeks medical attention immediately. Treatment of Trichophyton tonsurans on the body is usually with an antifungal cream, and sometimes oral medication is prescribed. There is no medical consensus on how long to bar contact, however the feeling is that the player should avoid contact until he or she has had three days of treatment, and then they should cover the lesion for the duration of the treatment.
If the infection is on the scalp then player should not compete until he or she has had 14 days of treatment. When competing/training after that, the lesion should be covered for the remaining period of drug treatment.
We ask for your assistance in continually educating those within your club on good hygiene practices. Although there has only been one reported case of Trichophyton tonsurans possibly being caught at a British club it is important that everyone stays vigilant to avoid an outbreak.

Two club members enjoyed success in competitions three hundred miles apart on Sunday the 4th of May.
Jessica Copperwaite, who is fourteen years old, took part in a national championship in Hereford, where she won the silver medal in the 57kg category. This was an excellent result but Jessica was disappointed that she had only won the silver.
Mick Bowmer went to Carlisle to take part in the Northern Area masters championship, in the 81kg category. There were four entries in the 81kg category and four in the 90kg category. One of the 81kg contestants decided to withdraw, so the organisers decided to combine the three 81kg players with the four 90kg players. This was a bit of a shock for Mick, who has modified his training and watched his diet to stay in the 81kg limit. Having got over the shock Mick set about the task in his usual determined manner and beat all of his six opponents with maximum score ippon throws, to win the gold medal.

Mick won his first four contests to earn a place in the final. At the end of normal time in the final, scores were level so it went to golden score, where the first person to get any score wins. Deciding that all-out attack was the best option Mick threw his opponent with a maximum ippon score thirty seconds into golden score.
On the same day two young club members won medals in the Goole Junior Open Judo Championships which took place at Goole Leisure Centre. Joel Flynn won the gold medal in the 50kg category for boys under twelve years of age with an excellent ippon throw. entry.
Adam fought throught the pool section of the competition but lost in the
knockout section to a Commonwealth Games competitor. However he fought his way
through the repechage to win a Bronze Medal thus gaining some ranking points,
an excellent result for a seventeen year old competing against men.

Adam Firth finished his competition programme for the year with a flourish by
winning the Gold Medal in the 73Kg category at the Goole open Judo
Championship for those under 20 years of age on Sunday December 12th 2004.
Although Adam is National Champion, this competition was still a stern test as

everybody wants to be the one to beat you.
